Connection to the theme Home

Winston’s family history in Kansas City traces back to his great-grandparents in the Leeds community, having been here almost a full century. By providing a snapshot of each generation and exploring their individual experiences, we 1) establish that “home” for us is synonymous with loved ones and community, and 2) appreciate the rich lives led by those people who came before and made it possible for us to be here. His ties to his home are rooted in this location because it has served as the container for his family and community, as well as the love he holds for them. The piece gives importance to each individual circumstance, but ultimately progresses to showcase as a whole the legacy that his family and city have collectively built.

Every generation faced its own unique experiences. For example, his great-grandpa “Shipwreck” played for the Kansas City Monarchs, but only participated locally since he couldn’t leave his 12 children to travel for games. Winston’s grandmother was about 25 years older than her youngest sibling; when her mother died, she stepped in to take care of her five younger brothers and sisters. All of these people were shaped equally by those around them and the city in which they resided; honoring them also entails showing gratitude to the geographical place that holds deep significance and history for us. Kansas City was the background and the enabler for their dreams, determinations, and struggles that they shared.
