Woven for the Cosmos by Edwing Mendez
Woven For The Cosmo is an homage to the Mexican serape, a traditional pattern often seen on blankets. This piece creates the wonder to place this humble tradition that is rooted in Mexican folk art into the sky. To me, these represent the beautiful hands-on artisan spirit that seems to have endless discipline and skill. It’s a traditional image so integral to my roots, but very disconnected to me as a second-generation immigrant. I reinterpret these traditions with contemporary digital tools and channel a new style of discipline. Through this, I am able to connect with the tradition in my own fashion and take claim as a contributor of the ever-changing mosaic that is Mexican art and culture. The serape may be a symbol of folk tradition from our past, but it’s also a part of our modern identity that we are currently still creating.
