Kathak Aura
Kick-Off Event, Kansas City Public Library – Central Library, June 5th, 5:30 PM
Bio: As a Kathak artist, my journey is deeply rooted in the traditions of Indian classical dance while embracing its evolution in contemporary spaces. With over 20 years of training under the esteemed Guru Prerana Deshpande, I have dedicated my artistic practice to preserving and innovating within the rich legacy of Kathak.
Through my work, I explore the rhythmic complexities, fluid storytelling, and emotive depth of Kathak, aiming to engage audiences beyond cultural boundaries. My performances are more than visual expressions—they are immersive narratives that weave together tradition, movement, and music. By integrating Kathak with modern themes and cross-disciplinary collaborations, I bring this centuries-old art form into new and unexpected spaces.
As the Founder and Artistic Director of Kathak Aura, I actively teach, mentor, and perform, fostering a deeper appreciation for Indian classical dance within diverse communities. I have presented my work at prestigious venues such as the Nelson Atkins Museum, the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, and international festivals. Additionally, my engagement with educational institutions and local arts organizations reflects my commitment to making classical arts accessible and relevant.
For Art in the Loop, I aspire to create an experience that bridges tradition and modernity—bringing the grace and rhythmic vitality of Kathak into the public realm. My performance will invite audiences to witness the poetry of movement, the dialogue between rhythm and stillness, and the vibrant cultural storytelling that defines Kathak.
In connection to the theme: I wish to present a fluid and dynamic choreography based on traditional syllables and repertoire, inviting the audience into a world where movement sparks curiosity and rhythm evokes emotion. The performance will begin with an invocation to sacred space and deities, setting a tone of reverence and discovery, before advancing into complex rhythmic patterns. These intricate footwork sequences, interwoven with expressive storytelling and high-speed pirouettes, will embody the essence of wonder—where each movement unfolds like a journey into the unknown.
Kathak is a rarely seen dance form in the Kansas City community, yet its foundation in rhythm, gesture, and storytelling makes it an accessible and mesmerizing experience for all. Originating in the ancient temples of India, Kathak has always been a dance of wonder—where stories of gods, goddesses, and human experiences come alive through motion. The ever-evolving nature of this art form allows contemporary interpretations to dynamically transform the emotional landscape of the performance, surprising and engaging audiences in unexpected ways.
Inspired by nature, storytelling, and contemporary themes, this performance seeks to ignite curiosity and deepen our shared sense of connection. Just as wonder is found in the unexpected moments that catch us off guard and make us pause, Kathak thrives on spontaneity and the beauty of fleeting expressions. By blending tradition with modernity, this piece will invite viewers to experience awe, discovery, and the joy of artistic exploration, allowing them to see movement not just as dance, but as a portal into the depths of human expression and imagination.
