Reflection by Adrianne Clayton
Library Southbound
Reflection began as a recycled canvas I found in my classroom, layered with the excess paint left at the end of the day. The inspiration came while watching my daughter perform a dance through Alvin Ailey’s Summer Camp. After the performance, she sat on the Paseo stairs with her head in her hands, glancing into the distance.
I wondered what she was pondering as she rested.
The background became the space that illustrated how it feels to wonder. It’s a combination of free form painting with color and stencils playfully capturing thoughtfulness and reflection. Some parts of her were opaque and other transparent, representing the presence and absences one feels when deep in thought. I wanted to play with color and shapes, both recognizable and unrecognizable, and layering.
