Engaging Folk Music Performance Coming to City Market Park

Join us at lunchtime on Wednesday, May 17th for an exciting performance by The Center State.

The performance will take place from 11:30 – 1:30 at  City Market Park, 3rd & Main St.

Part acoustic pop music, part troubadour with a silky lament, and part organic Americana, The Center State perform a confident mix of folk music that is agony filled in places and catchy in others, sometimes within the span of a single song. The trio and sometimes quintet of musicians are as eccentric as the music they play. The quirky Davidson couple plays upright bass and violin, and shares vocals with the songwriter of the group, Jeremy Sharp.

The Center State first full-length album, Close Enough To Miss – self recorded in St. Joseph Missouri with final mix engineer James Felver- is out now on iTunes, Spotify, and most other digital platforms.

Two Free Lunchtime Concert Series Coming to Downtown KC

The Downtown Council is pleased to partner with Art in the Loop and the Historic Garment District Group to present two free concert series in Downtown Kansas City starting next week!

ART IN THE LOOP MUSIC SERIES

The Art in the Loop 2017 Music Series will take place between 11: 30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Wednesdays throughout the summer. The first six performances will be in City Market Park, then performances will move to KC Streetcar and finally to the KC Public Library Central Library. Earlier this year over 100 musicians applied to participate in the series.  A panel of community members and musicians selected a diverse group of high-quality musicians to bring Downtown spaces to life.

While listening to the music you can also enjoy temporary artwork installed at these locations. In case of rain, performances will be moved into the City Market. Visit www.artintheloop.com for a full calendar of performances and information about the artwork.

Local Composer Leads Musical Happening at Rooftop Park

The rooftops of Downtown Kansas City will come alive on Thursday evening May 4, at 7:00 pm, when composer and musician Daniel Morel presents Kansas City Calling

The performance will take place at Prairie Logic, the public art installation and performance venue on the Green Roof above Cosentino’s Parking Garage, 1261 Main St, on the 6th floor.

Kansas City Calling is an evening-length musical happening that evokes both the bustling past and thriving current day of our Midwestern metropolis. The program features the music of Daniel Morel and draws on original and borrowed music to represent the city’s history. Musicians wander the rooftop park of Prairie Logic with ambient hums, antiphonal calls, and spoken texts to build a soundscape wafting over the skyline.

Daniel Morel is a Kansas City-based composer whose works are permeated with the Western sensibilities of his Colorado upbringing, drawing on influences ranging from prairie thunderstorms to classic American poetry.  Performance details and further information are available at www.danmorel.com.

Corrigan Station Art Unveiling, Fri., April 28, 4 p.m.

The Gentle Lady by Joe Munson Studios and Hermanos Design

 

Join Copaken Brooks & 3D Development as they unveil The Gentle Lady at Corrigan Station. View, for the first time, the commissioned sculpture by Joe Munson Studios and Hermanos Design. The Unveiling Ceremony will start at 4:00 p.m. with special remarks followed by a surprise performance and sculpture unveiling.

Corrigan Station developers, Copaken Brooks and 3D Development, join the Art in the Loop Foundation (AILF) to congratulate Joe Munson, the artist selected to create a permanent artwork for the Corrigan Station parking garage.

The commissioned sculpture, The Gentle Lady, comprises a 50-foot floating wing that is suspended from the garage and flies – rising, falling and rolling in response to the wind.

Charlotte Street Town Pavilion Art Studio Open House , Fri., April 28, 6-10 p.m.

Step into the studios of artists and engage with them about their work during the Charlotte Street Studio Residency Open House on FRIDAY, April 28, 6PM – 10PM at the Town Pavilion, 1100 Walnut, 6th Floor. Performance artists will have theatrical, music and dance performances throughout the night.

The event showcases the work of artists in Charlotte Street’s Studio Residency Program. It provides the public a chance to meet the artists, learn more about their work and processes, and attend live music and dance performances; readings; exhibitions; participatory activities; artist talks; special sales; and more. Activities will take place on Saturday as well. All events are free and open to the public.

Free parking will be available on Friday evening in the 1025 Main/Commerce Bank Parking Garage (park anywhere that is not reserved.)

The 2017 Art in the Loop Project: Cue!, a curated outdoor exhibition staged in partnership with the City of Kansas City, Missouri, and KC Streetcar, features 14 temporary artworks and performances along the city’s streetcar route, in the City Market, and at the Central Library.  This year Art in the Loop will also bring a diverse array of musicians to Downtown Kansas City through a lunchtime concert series, Wednesdays, from 11:30 – 1:30, May 17 through September 13, at the same locations where artwork is installed.

As the series prepares to open, a number of the participating artists, dancers, musicians, and poets take turns discussing their works. They are introduced by curator Jessica Borusky, an artist, curator, and educator who lives and works in Kansas City.

Art in the Loop¬running from May 1 to September 30¬is designed to make cultural experiences available to downtown residents, visitors, and workers.

Call for Visual Documentation (Photo/Video) Assistance

The Art in the Loop Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, wishes to contract with an individual to provide photographic and video documentation of the 2017 Art in the Loop Project: Cue!.  

Responsibilities

Within the context of documentation, including but not limited to, photographing and videotaping performances, programs and artworks, organizing photos, obtaining photo release forms, editing photos and videos, and working with Art in the Loop staff to create appropriate documentation for publication in print as well as on-line. Photographs will also be used to create a summary catalog for presentation at the Closing Reception in November. Video footage will be used to create a 3-4 minute video summary of the project.

The 2017 Art in the Loop Project: Cue! will infuse the center of Downtown Kansas City with innovative and engaging temporary art that will refresh, intrigue and surprise Downtown employees, residents, and visitors. The project also creates opportunities for local emerging and established artists to extend their practice into the Downtown environment with curatorial, professional and logistical support. This a curated outdoor exhibition of 10-12 temporary artworks and 12-16 performances presented in 4 locations Downtown, including:

Artists Sought for Creative Placemaking in Kansas City

The City of Kansas City, Office of Culture and Creative Services (OCCS) seeks two artists to participate as part of the core design team for the West Bottoms Reborn project. The selected artists will collaborate with the team to research, plan, design, and execute the project. The OCCS requests qualifications from artists who live and work within a seventy-five mile radius of Kansas City, Missouri. Up to five finalists will be selected and interviewed. From the group of finalists, two artists will be recommended for the project.

Each selected artist will act as a consultant to the team and will be expected to meet with the team for eight hours on a weekly basis, requiring a 400 hours total commitment, in addition to attending Advisory Committee meetings and project presentations. A stipend of $15,000.00 will be provided for each artist; the timeline for this project is February 2017 through May 2018.

Interested artists should read the full Request for Qualifications, including evaluation criteria, timeline, and project background and scope.

The deadline for submission is February 1, 2017. Candidates must email a letter of interest and resume to publicart@maaa.org. Candidates may attach up to five images and/or five short video clips (these should be condensed to fit the maximum allowable 25MB) or provide a website link.
