The Kansas City Design Center (KCDC) will host an open house on Thursday, May 12 from, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The event will showcase KCDC’s Art in the Loop Vision Study, Downtown Recycling System Vision Study and Connecting the Dottes Study. KCDC architecture, landscape architecture, and urban planning students will be on hand to discuss their project. Brief remarks will be made by the project leaders and sponsors at 6 p.m.
The Art in the Loop Foundation partnered with the Kansas City Design Center (KCDC) and the Downtown Council to develop a vision and master plan for working with artists to activate public spaces in Downtown Kansas City. One of the goals of the project was to consider how public art (temporary or permanent) can play a role in making the Downtown Loop (Central Business District) more walkable, authentic, safe and connected.

Charlotte Street Foundation’s Studio Residency Program Open Studios Weekend is the program’s largest annual event, hosting more than 500 visitors over two days. Through this unique event, the public is invited into the studios of Charlotte Street’s Resident Artists for an intimate opportunity to interact with the artists in their working environments in the Town Pavilion,
Open Studios Weekend 2016 will spotlight the work of over 20 artists—including 15 visual artists and photographers, 6 performing artists and ensembles, and 3 writers. All Artists-in-Residence have been awarded free studio space and related support through the Charlotte Street Studio Residency Program for the period of September, 2015—August, 2016.
Artist Studios will be open from 6PM to 10PM on Friday, April 29th with special offerings to include an array of original live music and dance performances on Friday evening. Artists will be on hand to discuss their work. Artwork will be available for purchase.
On Saturday, April 30th special events concurrent with the Studio Resident exhibition, The One Thing That Can Save America in Paragraph Gallery and Project Space will take place from 12:30PM to 5PM. Saturday offerings include a curatorial talk with Curator, Jessica Baran and studio residents at Paragraph Gallery starting at 12:30PM, followed by readings of new fiction and non-fiction by the writers-in-residence, a podcast listening party by residents, Paris of the Plains Podcast, and finish with live performances in Oppenstein Park.

Initiated by faculty from the UMKC Conservatory and the Kansas City Art Institute, ArtSounds explores cross-media expression through creative concert-making. Co-directors Mara Gibson and Paul Rudy set the stage for concert events outside the box and inside the mind’s eye and the eye’s ear. In ArtSounds performances, vision informs hearing and hearing guides sight in this essential dialogue at the messy intersections of human experience. ArtSounds performances are free and open to the public. Entering its 11th year, the Conservatory recently announced two new community partners: Charlotte Street Foundation and Art in the Loop.
There will be two events next year, November 5 at La Esquina as part of a larger Media Fest associated with CSF and May 4 at Prairie Logic associated with Art in the Loop. The Conservatory will co-sponsor all events. Each event will provide venue, marketing and a $1,000 stipend for the artists.
To apply, please submit a proposal by May 2 to Mara Gibson (gibsonmb@umkc.edu) for review by a panel including Paul Rudy, Mara Gibson, Ann Holliday and Amy Kligman.

Musicians, artists, sculptors, composers, choreographers, fashion designers, film-makers, dancers, and performance artists – are you interested in bringing your art outside and into the public realm of Downtown Kansas City to be experienced by Downtown residents, visitors, and workers?

The 2016 Art in the Loop Project: Connect will infuse the center of Downtown Kansas City with innovative and engaging temporary art that will refresh, intrigue and surprise our audience of Downtown employees, residents, and visitors. Equally important, the project will also create an opportunity for local emerging and established artists to extend their practice into the Downtown environment with curatorial, professional and logistical support.
2016 Art in the Loop Project: Connect is a curated outdoor exhibition of temporary artworks installed in and around Oppenstein Park at 12th and Walnut Streets. Art in the Loop is also partnering with the KC Streetcar Authority to include art installations at streetcar stops and on-board vehicles. Art in the Loop is also collaborating with the City of Kansas City, Missouri to manage the Ilus Davis Art in the Park Project which will include 4 temporary art installations and 4 community performances throughout the summer.
This year, we’re instituting a theme, “Connect.” While the project expands to take on new geographies and new partners, we will ask the artists to consider ideas of connecting with the urban environment, with modes of transit and with the diverse populations of Downtown Kansas City.
ART INSTALLATIONS
Our goal is to install 11 artworks in and around Oppenstein, 4 artworks at KC Streetcar stops or onboard vehicles, and 4 artworks in Ilus Davis Park from June through September 2016.
PERFORMANCES
An eclectic body of performance art, music, dance, and poetry will be performed weekly during the lunch-hour in Oppenstein Park, Thursdays, July through September. Food trucks will also offer food and beverages. A performance series is also planned to take place KC Streetcar vehicles and/or at streetcar stops, Fridays, July through September. Four 4 music performances will also be held in Ilus Davis Park from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the following Fridays, June 24, July 29, August 26 and September 30.

The Art in the Loop Foundation (AILF) is pleased to announce a Call for Concepts for our 2016 Art in the Loop Project: Connect. Artists from all disciplines are encouraged to apply.
AILF will host an information session to provide further information about this opportunity at Charlotte Street Foundation’s Paragraph Gallery on Tuesday, March 8, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Please RSVP to Ann Holliday, ann@downtownkc.org if you plan to attend.
This year, AILF will curate thoughtful and engaging performances and semi-permanent public artworks for Downtown Kansas City centered around the theme Connect. The project will expand its geographical and conceptual scope from Oppenstein Park, 12th & Walnut, and the Art Impact Zone to include the KC Streetcar line. AILF will partner with the Kansas City Streetcar Authority to showcase work at the streetcar stops and within the streetcar; thus, generating a call for concepts for Art in the Loop/Art on the Line. New visual and performance possibilities are abundant by way of this partnership, and AILF encourages artists to consider these new surfaces and spaces for artistic expression.
Art in the Loop is also collaborating with the City of Kansas City, Missouri to manage the Ilus Davis Art in the Park project which will include 4 temporary art installations and 4 community performances throughout the summer.
