Artist Jon Michael Johnson presents “Cue!” on-board the KC Streetcar, Aug 9

Join us at lunchtime on Wednesday, August 9th for “Cue!”, a dynamic dance performance, directed by local artist Jon Michael Johnson.

The performance will take place from 11:30 – 1:30 on-board the KC Streetcar , starting from the Union Station streetcar stop.

The ride begins and the passengers, along with four dancers,  start to hear the sounds that govern the streetcar. There is the clang of the bell, the announcement, the beep, the whistle. These sounds or “Cues” are what will keep the streetcar and its riders moving and informed.

There are also more random cues: voices, laughter, traffic. Each of these prompts a response from a dancer. Each dancer acts in turn until they are all moving. As the streetcar progresses through the route, a visual braid begins to emerge.

These prompts and responses reveal how our lives, and the different strands we represent, are woven together by Cues! Regardless of cultural background, religion, or politics — we all step back when the oncoming car honks its horn; we all quicken our step when we hear the “ding, ding, ding” of the closing doors.  We all push the same button when we call for a stop.  Our individuality is precious — but perhaps our commonality, revealed by our responses to cues we receive all day, every day, is even more so.

Two Engaging Artists Perform at Art Starts at the Library, Friday 8/4

Join us for First Fridays and Art Starts at the Library on Friday,  August 4th and be treated to two performances from Art in the Loop.

First, artist Beth Byrd-Lonski makes her final Art in the Loop appearance as Clarity Brown the clown, to lead the final installment of Silly Walkways.  The performance will take place from 5:00-6:00 p.m. on the sidewalk outside the Kansas City Public Library Central Library, 14 W 10th St.  Join the fun, and let yourself be a little silly, as the group moves through the specially-marked crosswalk near the library.  Clarity Brown will lead groups across in a silly, but safe, manner.

 

 

 

 

Next, move inside the library for a unique, enthralling performance.  Inscribed, by Jeramy Zimmerman/CatScratch Theatre, is a dance that explores what happens when we see reality and cannot look away – when we find a truth we cannot escape.  Four dancers, taking their cue from literature, enliven the library spaces.  Moving from the 4th floor, through the Grand Reading Room, and into Kirk Hall, the characters journey through discovery, understanding, communication, and community.  Inscribed is performed by Maura Garcia, Ilana Silverstein, Paco Vitug, and Jeramy Zimmerman, with Jon Johnson; music by Michael Oshiver and Heather Thornton.

The performance will start at 6:00 p.m.  in the library stacks on the 4th floor.

Cloud Canopy Meditation Series continues Thurs., 8/3

Cloud Canopy, Monica Dixon’s Art in the Loop installation, is making City Market Park (3rd & Main) more colorful through September. Her vibrant fabric sculpture aims to restore a sense of vitality to its audience and its environment, bringing presence and awareness to shared physical space.

As part of the installation, Monica invites you to join her remaining guided meditation sessions* in City Market Park from 12:15-12:45 pm on August 3rd and August 10th.

*Please bring water and a cushion, yoga mat, or blanket to sit on in the grass.

Rausch, Wickham, Burgess, and Brahl Perform On-board KC Streetcar, Wed. 8/2

An all star line up of local roots musicians, each stellar performers, and national recording artists in their own right, join forces to deliver authentic country music for the next installment of the Art in the Loop Music Series.  Rausch, Wickham, Burgess, and Brahl will incorporate classic country, western swing, and honky tonk as they delve deep into the catalog of country classics, entertaining patrons of all ages.

Artist Sarah Star Presents: Run the Town Group Run, Mon, 7/31

Join us at 8:30 pm on Monday, July 31st for a group run, part of artist Sarah Star’s 2017 Art in the Loop installation, Run the Town.

Get on your running (or walking) shoes!  Sarah Star has organized a group run, co-sponsored by Run816.  Experience Run the Town:  A Civic Trail with your fellow Kansas Citians, starting from the trailhead at The River Market West KC Streetcar stop, on Delaware between 3rd and 5th streets.  You will be guided by turn-by-turn signs along the route featuring colorful illustrations that playfully blend the rich history of our city with its exciting present. You will be cued to explore the public art and architecture in the area as well.

Enrique Chi to perform on-board the KC Streetcar

Join us at lunchtime on Wednesday, July 26th for an exciting acoustic performance by local artist Enrique Chi.

The performance will take place from 11:30 – 1:30 on-board the KC Streetcar, starting from the Union Station streetcar stop.

 

Enrique is best known locally as the lead vocalist for his band, Making Movies.  Originally from Panama, he has called the Kansas City area home since age 6.  In addition to writing and performing music, Enrique and his band-mates offer music lessons at the Mattie Rhodes Center, as well as other metro locations.  His music is usually categorized as “Afro-Cuban” or “Psychedelic Latin”.  Whatever the label, his sound is unique, engaging, and thoroughly enjoyable.  Enrique will board the first streetcar to leave Union Station just after 11:30 a.m.  Please join us from there, or from any stop along the streetcar route.

Upcoming performance from Into the Sun on-board the KC Streetcar

Join us at lunchtime on Wednesday, July 19th for an engaging world-folk performance by Into the Sun.

The performance will take place from 11:30 – 1:30 on-board the KC Streetcar, starting from the Union Station streetcar stop.

 

Into the Sun is a Kansas City based acoustic trio performing traditional folk music from Ireland, Scotland, America, and Canada. The band consists of David Agee on fiddle and mandolin, Gordon Bearss on guitar and bouzouki, and Molly McLaughlin on vocals and flutes.  The musicians will board the first streetcar to leave Union Station just after 11:30 a.m.  Please join us from there, or from any stop along the streetcar route.

Silly Walkways Returns to KC Public Library, July 14

Join Art in the Loop and artist Beth Byrd-Lonski as Clarity Brown, a fun-loving clown who loves to lead people of all ages in silly walking on Friday, July 14, 12:30 to 1:30 for the third installment of Silly Walkways.   Silly Walkways is directly inspired by The Monty Python Flying Circus skit: The Ministry of Silly Walks. This is a chance for everyone to have a light moment in the middle of the street (while staying safe, of course). Clarity Brown is the clown who will encourage you to get down and get back up again to get from point A to point B.

This Silly Walk will take place outside the Kansas City Public Library Central Library, 14 West 10th Street, and include a program, from the Kansas City Zoo, in the Library’s Children Section.

Carswell & Hope is the music of Nick Carswell, an Irishman now living in Lawrence, KS. Influenced by the songwriting of John Lennon, Neil Young and Tom Waits, Carswell & Hope combines rock and electronic elements with deft songwriting and inventive lyricism. Sky Smeed to perform on-board the KC Streetcar

Join us at lunchtime on Wednesday, June 28th for an engaging performance by Sky Smeed.

The performance will take place from 11:30 – 1:30 on-board the KC Streetcar , starting from the Union Station streetcar stop.

 

Sky Smeed was born and raised outside of Chanute, Kan., in an old, one-room schoolhouse his parents bought and turned into a home in the early 1970s.  Listeners often compare Sky to Gram Parsons, Neil Young and John Prine, though his easy-going demeanor, off-the-cuff banter and transparency link him to contemporaries like Todd Snider and Paul Thorn.  Sky will perform original music written over the past 10 years.  Sky will board the first streetcar to leave Union Station just after 11:30 a.m.  Please join us from there, or from any stop along the streetcar route.
